Appeals

Note that the information on this page is out‑of‑date and does not reflect current practice.

In keeping with the social character of these games, the Management Committee has decided that there will be no formal Appeals for regular Tuesday and Thursday games. However players on those nights are welcome to ask the Chief TD/Club Manager to review any decision of the TD/Host.

For any other game an appeal may be made against a judgement ruling by the Tournament Director. Such an appeal must have the consent of both players (the team captain in a teams event), and must be accompanied by a deposit of £10. The deposit will be forfeited if the Appeals Committee decides that the appeal was without foundation, but otherwise the deposit will be returned.

The format of the committee will be decided by the TD: traditionally committees were composed of three players sitting in person after the conclusion of the game. Nowadays it is more common to use an EBU‑appointed referee who has the status of an appeals committee but may be consulted either by phone or in person.

Whichever form of appeal is used, the committee will give its decision to the director who will inform the players. Players must not approach members of an appeals committee or attempt to discuss their decisions with them.

Only judgement rulings are subject to appeal—rulings involving a point of law or regulation may not be appealed, though players may ask the Chief TD/Club Manager to review such rulings.
